Static Veil exhibition, at the Martin Wong Gallery, at SFSU

What is the Static Veil? This entire exhibition has been a long dream come to life, that no one has ever done in our lifetime. Or the process to do this has been lost to time and was never shared to the artist world. There have been many setbacks along the way from faulty equipment and many more setbacks to capture the true elegance of the VHS tape unto its true format as opposed to rendering its aesthetics unto an adobe premiere video. But I wanted to do something no-one else has ever done before by capturing my works into a physical VHS cassette for anyone to plug in and enjoy, like plugging an SD card into the computer to view all of your works. the inspiration for this project came from my love for creating film and art. I was denied at the Stillwell exhibition and my artwork at the time was ok at best, but this denial reignited a burning passion in me to do something that would shock everyone and do something bizarre and unconventional even for modern standards. This is also a peak into a time period long lost and yet somehow not forgotten. We may have jumped into more advanced technologies to truly capture the moment and beauty of each creation, but I wanted to breathe life into my childhood and take a moment to appreciate the neo fusion of old cinema in new artworks in a reclassified media. As for my works this is everything I made in the last year and this year. As for the who that inspired me to make this project some of the inspirations came from Cowboy bebop episode’s 18 and 23, and storyteller, “Tatsuki Fujimoto’s” stories: Good bye Eri, Fire Punch and Chainsaw Man. Last but certainly not least my boss at the Doc film institute who had an old CR TV laying in her office. Since I have been working at the DocFilm Institute at SFSU I have had the pleasure to get into the thick and thin of filming and learning to work with professional film equipment for the first time in my life. Then the idea dawned on me, “what if I could turn my work into a VHS static Film for people to plug in and see the artwork." Some of these are animations, Gif’s and artwork imprinted into VHS films. As for the artwork you see in this room these are my artworks of different mediums as some of you may know I used to work exclusively in black and white, primarily ink. But as of recently I wanted to really sharpen my skills and create artworks of color and begin to understand realism so I can break the rules and take what I have learned and pour it into my own style. As for the exhibition itself this is my biggest trust into the community as I entrust this technology in the public space, for anyone and everyone to enjoy.

The cassette tapes where also donated by the Poetry Center at SFSU
